Simple and Creative Costume Ideas

Halloween is a lot like Christmas insofar that there are many scrooges out there who refuse to get in the spirit of the holiday. Some hate giving out treats to trick-or-treaters while others simply don’t want to dress up. Hey that’s ok — to each their own. But for those of you who want to let that eccentric side out a little bit and dress up for Halloween, I’ve gathered a few preliminary tips for your Halloween preparations.

Simple works: Let’s face it, many of us don’t have the time to dress elaborately for Halloween. But no worries because more often than not, ‘simple’ will work on this spookiest of holidays. Whether it’s the old reliable ‘sheet over the head’ ghost costume, or throwing in some plastic vampire dentures and opening up a bottle of ketchup, you don’t have to be Donatella Versace to pull off a successful Halloween costume.

Dress clever: The great thing about dressing clever is that if the idea is right, you don’t have to spend time or money to reach costume perfection.  From my experience, clever costumes usually mean DIY costumes. You don’t normally see a clever costume that someone hastily picked up at a local drug store the night before.  Additionally, DIY costumes more often than not involve a prop of some sort which helps convey the idea of the costume. Take for example, these clever outfits – a guy who dressed up as 50 shades of Grey by covering himself in gray paint samples, or a boy who hung a few baguettes around his neck and called himself the Gingerbread Man.

Go beyond personas: As many before have referenced, dressing up as a TV character or pop culture icon is always fun and popular. However, another way to be a Halloween hit is to dress as a culturally recognizable object. The Statue of Liberty or even a Hershey’s Kiss are just a few that come to mind.

Have fun in your costume: When it’s all said and done, dressing up for Halloween is should be fun. Be creative and let your imagination run wild.  My advice is to find a balance between a comfortable costume and a creative one.  Daniel Russo’s shower costume was pretty impressive in the Karate Kid, but it probably got annoying trying to get through doorways.  Having a comfortable costume is yet another tip for those of you dressing up at work. A Freddie Kruger costume probably wont be the best decision if you are sitting in front of a keyboard all day.

Lastly, start thinking of Halloween costumes today so you don’t find yourself behind the game tomorrow. What are you dressing up as? Do you have any creative DIY costumes in the making? Let us know, and if they are good, we may even feature them in our posts leading up to Halloween.
