So many of my friends are engaged and planning their weddings right now, that I often feel like suggesting that they pool their money together and have one giant wedding. I know they would all stare at me as if I had three heads and just spoke Greek to them, but it’s just a thought. Weddings are costly as we saw in The True Cost of a Wedding Knot, and in this economy that can definitely pose a problem. Brides want their dream wedding. They want wedding invitations that are unique and showcase their individuality. They want the recipient to open up the invitation and be enamored with it, but sometimes that’s hard to do when you’re a “budget bride.” Here’s my number one tip to those of you that want that perfect wedding invitation… embrace the DIY (do-it-yourself) culture, and personally add and select embellishments.

It’s no secret that 123Print sells full-color wedding invitations in a variety of styles and colors. While we personally feel the invitations we offer are gorgeous as standalone invitations, certain to catch the recipients’ attention… maybe you want something more. Maybe you want to add a few details to really make them pop. Here’s where the DIY comes in. There are plenty of design and color choices for wedding invitations over at 123Print, so find the one that best suits you and the theme/color scheme of your wedding. Once you have the invitations in your hands here are some awesome DIY ideas to jazz up the basic wedding invitation:

1.) Rhinestones

Available pretty much everywhere (this particular example is from a seller on Etsy), rhinestones can give the simplest invitation a more glamorized look. Why not add some rhinestones to Twilight Affair or 5th Ave Brilliance?

2.) Ribbon (Any color, any size, any fabric, and any thickness!)

Where can’t you get ribbon?! Pick it up at your local craft store, Wal-Mart, Target, even the drug store. The color choices are unlimited, so you’ll have no problems finding a color that ties into your color scheme. Tie the ribbon around the invitation in a loose bow to add a slight touch of elegance. While ribbon can be added to just about any invitation, I suggest trying it with Love Crystallizes and Simple Bliss.

3.) Lace

Add lace to the outer edges of your wedding invitations, or even the envelope. This particular seller on Etsy has made it even easier for you to do this yourself. It’s sticky and adhesive fabric tape! Try this with Plum Enchantment or Solid Black.

4. Burlap

Alright, even I admit that this one caught me off guard. When someone suggested this I thought for sure it would look strange – but it’s so cute! Simply take your invitation and add the burlap backer. This would look great with Seaside Vows or Birds of a Feather.

5. Butterflies

Available on Etsy, or probably any local craft store, are these cute different colored butterflies. Obviously only use these if a.) you like butterflies, and b.) it matches your motif. Cute idea regardless! They’d look great on Buttery Yellow Bouquet or Falling for Love!

Get inspired! It’s YOUR wedding!
