Standing Out in the Workplace

Regardless of whether you've worked at your company for five months or five years, there is always room to improve. In fact, some employees find that their work becomes stagnant after a couple of years time. Luckily, there are plenty of conscious steps you can take to stand out in the office – even if everyone already knows your name. Here are some of those ways:

Always Represent Your Brand
It doesn't matter what your place of business is, you must always be conscious of your surroundings. Work doesn't necessarily stop when the clock strikes 5 p.m. When out and about, you never know who you're going to run into, whether it's your boss or an important client.

However, representing your brand can be done in more ways. For example, having a professional business card on hand at all times could never hurt.

Find a Happy Medium
There are some people who step into the office, do their work and leave. On the other hand, there are others who spend most of the day chatting with co-workers. Try to find a balance between these two. Building strong relationships with your fellow employees is helpful, but try not to go overboard. Hint: Getting to know people sometimes takes getting out of the office. Go out for lunch or snag drinks after work with a co-worker.

Take It to the Next Level
Getting ahead means more than just doing your job. Sometimes you have to go above and beyond to shine. Strive to improve. Ask for feedback from your managers and use this to become better in the workplace.

Own Up to Everything
Everyone makes mistakes. You're only human, after all. If you happen to do something wrong, first take responsibility, then fix it and make sure it doesn't happen again. It's the adult way to go about things. You won't gain anything from sweeping problems underneath the rug or trying to blame someone else.

Be Yourself
You should feel free to be yourself in and out of the workplace. Companies hire different personalities because diversity is one of the keys to success for a sustainable business. Don't be afraid to be who you are. Your quirks and idiosyncrasies are what can get you noticed. In addition, if you make yourself transparent, you'll be able to play to your strengths, according to Forbes.
