Tips for Finding a Business Mentor

When you are looking for tips on how to run your business, where do you turn? You probably check websites like Forbes and Inc, and maybe even turn to our blog. While these are helpful, you may also benefit from having a business mentor. This person should have experience in your industry and some time to spare in order to be helpful to you. Here are some tips for finding the right business mentor:

Ask Around
While at networking events or visiting with other professionals in the industry, ask around to see who others consider their mentor. You may be able to also meet with that person to talk business. See if you can get their phone number or email address, or even have lunch with them. Once you meet, you can decide if you click or not, and whether you would like them to be your mentor. You don't have to literally say, "Will you be my mentor?" Instead, just treat them like a confidant, turn to them with company-related questions and dilemmas.

Join a Trade Association
Just about every trade out there has an association that is full of great resources. See if you can find one to join in your area. Here you may meet several individuals who can be your business mentors. They may be working in the industry or have recently retired. Some associations even offer official mentoring programs where people are encouraged to meet and discuss their companies. Keep in mind, though, you don't have to be a part of a program to have a mentor. Just keeping in touch with your mentor can help when you have business-related questions or need advice.

Know What You're Looking For
When you think of a mentor, what do they offer? Are they a rock star in your industry who has led several successful companies? Maybe they are a master at brainstorming with an office covered in Post-it notes who has plenty of ideas to share. It's important not only to know what you're looking for in a mentor, but also to have an idea of the direction you want your business going. Are you hoping to increase profits or grow your client base? These are necessary points to know when searching for a mentor and making use of their expertise.
