It’s tough to know which spring clothes to wear to the office. Spring is always a tricky season as far as dressing for the workplace goes. This in-between period isn’t quite warm enough to don your summer wardrobe, but it’s also around the time you can’t stand the look of your winter clothes anymore. One day it’s raining cats and dogs, and you have to bundle up; the next day it’s all sunshine, and you wish you hadn’t worn your too-warm sweater to the office. Plus, it might start out as a frigid morning and then end up toasty. Ah, decisions, decisions. It’s too early in the morning to think this much!
To help you make the right spring wardrobe choices in the a.m., the following are spring clothes to wear to the office that allow you to bundle or de-layer, depending on the season’s tricky weather mood swings.
1. The light floral jacket. On a chilly day, you can wear this J. Crew stunner under a coat; on a warm day, you can wear it alone. It’s chic and anything but boring, and works well to dress up a plain pair of black slacks or to pair with a gray pencil skirt and black tank top. What’s even more awesome about it is that when the workday is over and you head to dinner or a happy hour, this jacket transitions perfectly from day to night — no need for a wardrobe change!
2. The perfect trench coat. Some trench coats are REALLY thin, and I think those should be saved for summer showers. In the spring, you really need one with some thickness to it. I love this Raoul coat to add to your spring clothes to wear to the office for several reasons, including its gorgeous eggplant color, which is a refreshing change from black or khaki.
3. The black sheath dress and pumps. Let’s start from the bottom up, with the footwear. Unless you live in a place where it’s really warm (we’re jealous of you sometimes, Florida) and it’s appropriate to wear open-toed pumps and sandals to the office, stick to closed-toe shoes in springtime. You can’t go wrong with classic or modern black pumps, like this lady has on above. Pumps look great with pants, dresses and skirts, and they match with almost anything in your closet. Next, the black sheath dress (this one’s from Bailey 44). Talk about the best spring clothes to wear to the office! It goes with pretty much all of your shoes — from ballet flats to platforms — as well as any color of cardigan or short jacket (stick to ones that hit at your waist or hips). When you feel too warm in the office, it’s appropriate to take your jacket or cardi off because you still have the modest sheath (thick straps/possibly a boat neck) underneath. When you feel too cold, add back the layer and a spring scarf. You can also add tights underneath on a cold day, and if it warms up later, just take them off in the ladies’ room. 🙂 Brilliant!
4. The comfy-casual-yet-work-appropriate outfit. Let’s face it, there are days when you just want to throw your hair back in a bun or ponytail, shunning the blow-dry, and wear something comfortable to the office. I adore a great pair of white pants (note that I didn’t say white jeans, which won’t work for more formal office environments) paired with a light sweater with a collar, like this one from Club Monaco. This is kind of the perfect mix between your summer (white pants) and winter (sweater) clothing. Just make sure to choose a light-wool or cotton sweater that’s not too bulky or you could feel hot and look too wintery. For a comfortable day, opt for your ballet flats — a metallic color that coordinates well with your jewelry is a stylish touch.
